For many, our annual "Big Climb" weekend has become a cherished tradition, rotating each year between some of the UK’s most iconic mountains, including Snowdon in Wales and Scafell Pike in the Lake District. 

This year, the group was fortunate to experience unseasonably mild weather, allowing them to tackle the purpose-built zig-zag path to the summit in just under four hours. After taking in the breathtaking views from the top, they embarked on the long descent to the valley floor, where a well-earned hot meal awaited them. In contrast to previous years where participants faced blizzard-like conditions, the 2024 edition of the Big Climb was marked by calm skies and pleasant weather—much to the delight of everyone involved. 

Adding to the experience, the guides shared some fascinating facts about the mountain. The first ascent of Ben Nevis was made in 1771, and since then, millions have followed in those footsteps. The fastest recorded round-trip was achieved in under 90 minutes—though our group was more focused on enjoying the journey than breaking records! 

Headmaster, Mr Paton, who accompanied the group, shared his thoughts on the event, saying, “The Big Climb is such a special event in our annual calendar, and I am delighted to support it year after year. The mountains hold a special place for me, and to be able to share them with parents and students is wonderful.” 

Mountain climbing is an integral part of life at Radnor House. We are particularly proud of our Sixth Formers, the highest percentage from all local schools, who participate in the Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award each year. Adventure is in our DNA at Radnor, and our campus setting fosters a love of the outdoors, which is perfectly complemented by events like the Big Climb. 

A huge thank you to the dedicated parent team behind the trip, especially the trustees of the Friends of Radnor House Sevenoaks, who expertly managed the logistics of housing and feeding the group in Scotland for the weekend. We look forward to seeing everyone again next year for our Snowdon adventure in Wales!
