Maths Masterclass

Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses

We have worked with the Ri for a number of years, hosting Ri Mathematics Masterclasses for students in Year 9 from Radnor and other local schools.

The Ri Mathematics Masterclasses for secondary school students are designed to encourage, inspire and engage young people in the art and practice of mathematics. Each session lasts for two and a half hours and is led by a different speaker on their chosen topic. During each workshop, the students explore the topic individually or in small groups, with support and guidance given by the speaker and helper.

This year’s classes provided opportunities for students to learn about topology, probability theory and its application to TV game shows, and the history of mathematics. This year’s speakers were Mike Fletcher, a consultant for TV game shows, Ioanna Georgiou, a Chartered Mathematician and author of ‘Peculiar Deaths of Famous Mathematicians’, and Dr Niki Kalaydzhieva, a senior lecturer at University College London.
