Radnor Forest School
At Radnor, we recognise the importance of outdoor learning as a tool to develop resilience, perseverance, and mental toughness, alongside fostering a love for the natural environment.
Weekly Outdoor Sessions
Pupils take part in Forest School every week within our expansive 30-acre estate. These sessions, led by our specialist Forest School leaders, provide children the freedom to explore, play, build, create, imagine, and use their senses to experience the outdoor environment and engage with one another.
Activities and Skills
Children sing around the fire, learn to use and make tools, build dens, dig in the mud, identify bugs, and construct their own bug hotels. These hands-on activities teach practical skills that they can apply in the reception garden and woodland areas during other lessons and playtimes.
Holistic and Child-Led Environment
Forest School is a holistic, child-led teaching environment where children learn to take responsible risks, boosting their confidence, self-awareness, and self-esteem. It provides a free and open learning environment in which children acquire a wide range of skills within a woodland setting.
Developing Key Skills
We value outdoor learning as a crucial tool for developing perseverance, self-reliance, and teamwork. Respect for and enjoyment of the natural world are central to our outdoor curriculum, making it an integral part of life at Radnor. These sessions offer children an ideal opportunity to become more active and healthy in a fun and stimulating environment, deepening their understanding and awareness of their natural surroundings.
A Comprehensive Learning Approach
Led by our specialist Forest School leader, children engage in activities such as singing around the fire, making tools, building dens, identifying bugs, and creating craft items from natural materials. The skills learned in Forest School sessions are applied across the broader curriculum and during playtime, enhancing the overall educational experience.
At Radnor, our Forest School is a unique and essential component of our commitment to holistic, outdoor, and experiential learning, ensuring our children develop a deep connection with the natural world and the skills to thrive within it.
