Celebrating Diwali in Nursery: A Day of Light and Joy

Celebrating Diwali in Nursery: A Day of Light and Joy

This week, our Nursery was abuzz with excitement as we celebrated Diwali, the Festival of Lights, with a day full of cultural exploration and joyful activities. Diwali, derived from the Sanskrit term “Diavali” meaning “row of lights,” symbolizes the victory of light over darkness and good over evil.

To immerse the children in the rich traditions of this festival, we organized a variety of hands-on activities. The little ones enthusiastically crafted intricate Rangoli patterns, using vibrant colours to create beautiful designs that are traditionally placed at entrances to welcome guests and deities. They also moulded and decorated their own diya lamps, small clay lamps that are lit during Diwali to signify the triumph of light over darkness.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement as the children danced to lively Indian music, embracing the joyous spirit of the festival. We were privileged to welcome a parent who shared her family’s Diwali traditions, showcasing special attire and sparklers, much to the delight of the little ones. This firsthand sharing enriched the children’s understanding of the festival’s cultural significance.

In addition to the festivities, we took the opportunity to educate the children about the origins and significance of Diwali. We shared the story of Lord Rama’s return to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana, a tale that underscores the victory of good over evil and is central to Diwali celebrations in many parts of India.

It was a heartwarming day that celebrated culture, creativity, and community. The children’s enthusiasm and curiosity were evident in every activity, and it was wonderful to see them engage so deeply with the traditions of Diwali.
