Year 1 Step into the World of Florence Nightingale
On Tuesday, our Year 1 pupils embarked on an exciting journey through history, stepping into the life of Florence Nightingale during an immersive and interactive workshop. Through role-play, hands-on activities, and captivating storytelling, the children explored the incredible legacy of the woman who revolutionized modern nursing.
The session began by delving into Florence’s early life, uncovering her childhood dreams and aspirations. Pupils took on different roles, imagining what it was like to grow up in the 19th century and how Florence’s determination led her to pursue her passion for helping others. As they followed her journey across Europe, they discovered how her travels influenced her approach to medicine and patient care.
The workshop then transported the children to Scutari Hospital during the Crimean War, where Florence made history with her pioneering work. In this immersive setting, the pupils learned about the conditions soldiers faced, the improvements Florence implemented, and how her dedication to cleanliness and organization transformed healthcare. Taking on roles as nurses and patients, the children engaged in practical activities, gaining a deeper understanding of the challenges and triumphs Florence experienced.
As the workshop concluded, the children explored Florence’s homecoming and the lasting impact of her work on hospitals and healthcare. They reflected on her perseverance, leadership, and compassion—qualities that align closely with our Round Square Heroes mottos and Core Values.
This engaging and educational experience brought history to life, sparking curiosity and inspiring our young learners to think about the importance of resilience, kindness, and innovation. It was a truly memorable day, and we look forward to seeing how our pupils continue to embrace these values in their own learning journeys.
