Roaming Through Rome: Sixth Form Explores the Eternal City
During October half-term, 41 Sixth Form students and 5 staff members embarked on an unforgettable four-day journey to Rome, immersing themselves in the city’s rich history, art, and culture. Setting off early on Sunday, the group arrived with a full itinerary and boundless enthusiasm, ready to take on the bustling streets of Italy’s capital.
The “100,000 Step Trip,” as it’s now fondly known, covered some of Rome’s most iconic landmarks. Students explored everything from the grandeur of St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museum to the ancient splendor of the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum. Other highlights included the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon, and the Trevi Fountain, though some students were disappointed to find the fountain partially obscured for maintenance work.
Each day was filled with walking, sightseeing, and learning, and the group was treated to unseasonably warm weather, with clear skies and temperatures reaching 28°C on Monday. The students soaked up both the city’s vibrant culture and the sunshine, all while enjoying ample free time to explore in small groups, taking in Rome at their own pace.
Italian cuisine was a memorable part of the experience. The group enjoyed traditional dishes, including pizza, lasagna, and a delicious chicken and roast potato meal, giving everyone a taste of authentic Roman dining.
Reflecting on the trip, Mrs. Southgate, Deputy Head of Sixth Form, expressed her pride in the students, who, in her words, “all behaved very well” despite “walking slowly” at times! She hopes the trip has sparked a lasting love for Rome in everyone who attended, as they return with memories of a city steeped in beauty and history.
The Sixth Form Rome trip offered students a remarkable opportunity to connect with the past, appreciate incredible art, and experience Italian culture firsthand—an experience that will undoubtedly be remembered for years to come.
