LGBT+ History Month: Activism and Change
LGBT+ History Month: Activism and Change
This week, our assemblies have focused on LGBT+ History Month, which is marked in the UK each February. The theme for 2025 is Activism and Change, highlighting the individuals and movements that have shaped the fight for equality.
In assemblies, Mr Salvage led pupils through an exploration of tolerance and respect of all individuals before introducing students to a popular reference point: Wicked. The book, and its later film adaption, are a reflection of the adoption of fascism in society and the changes that fascist ideologies can introduce in order to change perceptions of minorities, as well as the power of propaganda. Through this popular reference point and the activism of Elphaba, pupils were then introduced to other activists who have led change for the LGBT community in recent history, such as Harvey Milk, Alice Nkom and Edith Windsor. These people have led change around the world in order to reduce discrimination for the LGBT+ community and spoken up for the rights of minority communities.
Through introducing pupils to such individuals and their contributions, we can ensure that our core value of respect is nurtured in our school community and beyond.
